Abstract | In view of South Africa’s ongoing pursuit of mega events, this chapter contributes community stories that recognize mega events as a key tourism driver towards generating lasting employment opportunities for growth in knowledge capability within society. Within the context of the Green Point community in Cape Town, this chapter explores the positioning of employment and human capacity development as Human Resource Management/HRM considerations to understand the narrative of African countries pursuing mega events as sustainable tourism activities that promise lasting employment opportunities. The exploration follows a qualitative approach using narrative inquiry to explore the subjective and multiple views of the respondents towards understanding the social influence of the FIFA 2010 World Cup on realizing a legacy of sustainable employment initiatives in Green Point. As a result of the first-hand stories collected from Green Point community members, this chapter presents a selection of interpretations that give insight into the meaning the respondents ascribed to their lived experiences of the FIFA 2010 World Cup. The stories provide understanding and enlightenment into how the social impacts experienced, influenced the process of Human Capacity Development through sustainable tourism activities such as hosting the FIFA 2010 World Cup in Green Point. |
