Abstract | In this chapter, I look more closely at the phenomenon of resistance under the banner of Islam. First of all, I analyze the concept with reference to the theoretical literature; I will ask what ‘resistance’ means to the powerless; second, I explore the ways in which ‘oriental’ spaces and identities are conceptualized and constructed, ‘even in their resistance to “western” hegemony"'; third, the chapter situates Islamic resistance in terms of historical and contemporary Muslim struggles; and, finally, it demonstrates the urgency of ‘Islamic resistance’ by exploring case studies of Hamas in the Palestinian Territories and Hizbullah in Lebanon.. My own research has focused on the particular experiences of Arab-Muslim women and I will refer to their words to illustrate my arguments. |
