Description | Our two-part workshop explores the aesthetics, politics, and technologies of archiving small-scale internet, community, and non-commercial radio stations. In the first part of the workshop, we'll introduce our current project, "Archiving Community: Social Infrastructure and Small-Scale, Online Radio Stations" and lead participants through a series of prompts about the aesthetics and politics of what constitutes an archive. Together, we'll ask questions like how do you create and curate an archive, and, crucially, what is it that the archive enables? Who has access to an archive? Who is the archive for and why? Is there a distinction between a publicly accessible media center to listen to previous broadcasts and an archive? And, if so, what are the criteria regarding the stored items and how are they handled? In the second part of this conversation, we discuss what building an archive actually means - from collection of metadata to storage space - exploring what solutions exist and, importantly, how might we be able to imagine new ones? |
