Abstract

Ongoing protests are challenging the legitimacy of the Islamic Republic of Iran. In 2022, the tragic death of a young Iranian woman continues to affect the Islamic Republic's foundation. Her death led to a massive protest movement that brought together people from different social classes, including some of the regime's staunch supporters. These protests have sparked discussions about the Islamic Republic's legitimacy and complicated relationship with the state, politics, and society. This chapter delves into the protest movement's underlying causes, examining local and global factors contributing to its emergence.
