Dr Saki Raheem

Dr. Saki Raheem is a Reader in Biological Chemistry and Biochemistry in the School of Life Sciences. He obtained his Ph.D. in Organic Chemistry from the University of St. Andrews (Scotland) and holds a Master of Science Degree in Medical Microbiology from the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine (University of London). His Ph.D. research was funded by the Nestlé Research Center (Lausanne, Switzerland). Prior to his appointment at the University of Westminster, he held a position at University College London (UCL). He was a postdoctoral research fellow at Weill Cornell Medical College, Cornell University (NY, USA), in the Department of Medicine. Here, he worked on the metabolism of Mycobacterium tuberculosis (Mtb), developing an assay that measured the ability of chemical compounds to gain entry to and act against Mtb. During this period, he split his time between the USA and GlaxoSmithKline in Spain

The Raheem laboratory focuses on antitubercular and antimalarial drug discovery using medicinal chemistry and metabolomics technologies. Our current interest lies in the development of isocitrate lyase inhibitors and natural product chemistry.
