Dr Mariangela Spinillo

I am a lecturer in English for Academic Purposes (EAP) and Linguistics. I have a Master’s degree and a PhD in English Linguistics, both from University College London. Both my MA dissertation and my PhD thesis are on the field of syntax.

In addition to my work at Westminster I am an examiner for the Chartered Institute of Linguists and UCL. I am also on the editorial board of the 'Information Design Journal' published by John Benjamins.

Prior to joining Westminster I taught undergraduate and postgraduate modules in linguistics, mostly English syntax, but also semantics and discourse analysis, at University College London, King’s College London, University of Oxford and Roehampton University. I have also delivered language training programmes to the Foreign and Commonwealth Office, the Ministry of Defence and the London Metropolitan Police.

My interest within linguistics has been mostly in the field of English syntax, more specifically nominal syntax. Both my MA dissertation and PhD thesis focus on this area. My PhD thesis investigated the nature of the English word class known as determiners.
