Dr Ester Bonmati Coll


I joined the University of Westminster as a Lecturer in Computer Science and Engineering in April 2022. I have a long-standing interest in medical imaging and artificial intelligence.

I have a degree in Computer Science and a master degree in Computer Vision. In 2016, I completed my PhD with a thesis titled “Study of brain complexity using information theory tools”. 

Before my current position at university of Westminster, I was a Senior Research Fellow at University College London (UCL). During my time at UCL, I was fortunate to be part of several research centers: the Wellcome / EPSRC Centre for Interventional and Surgical Sciences (WEISS), the UCL Centre for Medical Image Computing (CMIC), and the Computer Assisted Navigation, Diagnosis and Intervention (CANDI) research group. Currently, I mantain an Honorary Senior Research Fellow position at UCL, allowing me to continue collaborating with former colleagues and contributing to ongoing research projects. 

I have been fortunate to receive the following awards:

My research focus lies at the intersection of artificial intelligence, medical image computing and computer assisted interventions. I have extensive experience in ultrasound-guided procedures for the detection and diagnosis of cancer, particularly in prostate and pancreas.

My current research interests include the early detection of cancer and image syntesis, areas where I belive machine learning can make significant contributions to healthcare.

Furthermore, I am actively involved in supervising PhD students, and guiding the next generation of researchers in computer sicence and medical imaging.

I am also the Early Career Representative in the Research Committee at the University of Westminster.
