Dr David Straw

I became a lecturer in criminology at the School of Social Sciences in 2023. Prior to coming to the University of Westminster, I spent some years at the University of Manchester, both as a postdoctoral fellow at the Global Development Institute and then as a Teaching Associate at the Department of Criminology. I also have experience as a practitioner in the criminal justice system.

My research interests initially centred on the development of sociological theories of human rights violation in Turkey. More recently, I have started to examine criminological theory and its portrayal of the Armenian Genocide. I presented on this topic at the ESC Conference in Athens, 3-6 September 2025.

I welcome enquiries from prospective PhD students on topics related to state crime, human rights and criminological theory.
