Abstract | The presented research investigates the use of Interactive Recorded Music (IRM) in a specific commercial context, notably the use of IRM by music artists in presenting their music to commercial audiences either to increase brand awareness or to directly gain revenue from the sale of IRM to fans. As such, the term Interactive Commercial Music (ICM) is defined to represent this specific case of IRM. Extending on the album app platform, the authors have investigated also incorporating ICM within the established format. This paper therefore presents the prior art and context of ICM, before introducing the unique variPlay playback system – a novel interactive album app platform that enables listeners to manipulate the musical content as it is played, utilising intelligent algorithms and specific music production methods to ensure that playback is always smooth and representative of the creative vision of the music artist. |
