Abstract | Archives have variously been described as ‘traces’, ‘time-machines’, or ‘touchstones’ that lead to the recollection of past events. They are what gets left behind from individuals’ and communities’ lives. Archives offer us a means to gain knowledge – albeit through the lens of present-day interpretation – about our society. Archives tell individual stories but they also contribute to collective memory. Sharing of evidence and memory shapes both our sense of ourselves as individuals and an understanding of our place in our community. My paper explores my interpretation of a selection of records held in the University of Westminster Archive. These archives tell individual stories of sporting achievement, but they also contribute to the collective memory of the Polytechnic and its members. |
