| Abstract | The paradox of seeking new global forms and modern technologies that projects a ‘modern’ image of a city or a place to the rest of the world and yet, practicing the familiar and ‘traditional’ architecture’ and lifestyle is an ongoing predicament. In contemporary Iran, the global forces and the power of the ‘ Real Estate’ developers have changed the specificity and the unique characteristic of regional architecture and the urban space, erasing the differences and losing the identity of most of the major cities. However, there are still buildings in some cities, small towns and in the villages that reflect specify of the place. The socio-political changes in Iran since the fall of Pahlavi dynasty—who were committed to rapid ‘modernization’ – combined with the arrival of a more ‘regionalist’ administration – with a serious commitment to localization- at the time of fast global changes – has made Iran one of the unique cases where a more recent hybrid has emerged. This survey is not a revival of what has been produced in the past on Iran’s vernacular architecture; its intention is to explore what could a true and responsive vernacular architecture in contemporary Iran is. |
