Abstract

For almost 20 years the expansion of media management and economicsteaching and research in China was driven by the overlapping aims of Chinese and international universities, the expansion and outward trajectory of the PRC’s media firms, and increasing interest in their application of international management practices. This chapter examines the drivers and barriers informing the development of Sino-Western educational partnerships and the enriching of related practice in China. It explores the political and ideological context for current and future collaboration and draws upon the experience of practitioners who have been active in the development ofjoint initiatives. The chapter concludes by addressing the theoretical aspects of reconciling pedagogy and research, and sets out practical considerations facing media educatorsseeking to extend and build upon international ventures. It places these discussionswithin wider debates concerning dewesternization and decolonialization.
