Dr Li Jin

Dr. Li Jin is a Senior Fellow of UK Higher Education Academy and senior lecturer in the department of computer science, University of Westminster.  Her expertise and research are centred on digital interactive technology including Virtual Reality, Augmented Reality, Gamification, and social media services for real time systems and applications including cultural informatics and education in order to meet the needs of industry and society.

Li has been involved in researching the use of emerging creative technology for Technology Enhanced Learning (TEL). She synthesizes this research that links how people interact in augmented environments to expand a new dimension of self –‘technoself’ within an evolving technological society and further challenge ideas of digital transformation. Li generates a deeper understanding of empirical sociological learning model driven by socio-technical innovations to enhance student engagement. Using the concept of ‘technoself pedagogy’ she initiated, in a series of interdisciplinary collaborative studies with colleagues in psychology and other disciplines, how the actual use of technologies, developed in her own field of computer science, can be used to shape and reshape the identities of learners and learning communities.

Li's interdisciplinary research bridges computer science, psychology and social science.  She has published a number of research papers in international conferences and journals, contributed to a book chapter in the Handbook of Research of Technoself, and acts as peer-reviewer, programme committee member and session chair for several conferences including annual International Conference on Education and New Learning Technologies. Her own cutting-edge work with students has been shared with colleagues and partners from other UK and overseas institutions for public engagement including V&A, Alexandra Palace Charitable Trust, and Royal College of Physicians through presentations, including Fostering Creativity and Transforming Realities Workshops, as well as through her promotion of students as co-creators across the university and beyond.

Research Partnership with the Alexandra Palace Charitable Trust (APCT) Li has made influential contributions of her technoself pedagogic research to AP’s on-going learning and community programme on ‘Teaching the past today to the inquisitive minds of the future’. She was invited to give her public speech on ‘Digital Transformation with Student Engagement’ in the ‘New Tech for Old Stories’ session at Alexandra Palace Great Fete on 18 August 2018.

Museum University Partnership Thinking Project Bid awarded by the Arts Council England in 2017 Research partnership set-up with the Royal College of Physicians (RCP) to promote gender equality in STEMM through reveal stories of female physicians to the public. Li's professional expertise helped curators of the collection to think beyond their current boundaries, providing a new, digital, and technological solution to collection utilisation. Li was invited to disseminate the project outcome in national MUPI Symposium on 1st Feb. 2018. The project outcome contributes to the 'Inspiring Physicians of the Future' program in the 500th anniversary celebration of Royal College of Physicians.
