Dr Saki Raheem is a Senior Lecturer in Biological Chemistry and Biochemistry in the Faculty of Science and Technology. He received his Ph.D in Organic Chemistry from the University of St. Andrews (Scotland) and hold a Master of Science Degree in Medical Microbiology from London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine (University of London). His Ph.D research was funded by Nestle Research Center (Lausanne, Switzerland) . Prior to his appointment at the University of Westminster, he held a position at the University College London (UCL). He was a postdoctoral research fellow at Weill Cornell Medical College, Cornell University (NY, USA) in the Department of Medicine. Here he worked on the metabolism of Mycobacterium tuberculosis (Mtb), developing an assay that measured the ability of chemical compounds to gain entry to and act against Mtb. During this period he split his time between the USA and GlaxoSmithKline in Spain.
The Raheem laboratory focuses on antitubercular and antimalarial drug discovery using medicinal chemistry and metabolomics technologies. Our current interest lies in the development of isocitrate lyase inhibitors and natural product chemistry.
