Dr Pinar Uysal Onganer

A key strand of my public and community engagement focuses on prostate cancer awareness among Black men, who experience a disproportionate burden of the disease and are often diagnosed at a younger age or at a more advanced stage. My aim is to support culturally sensitive conversations around risk, early detection, family history, stigma, and the importance of informed engagement with healthcare services.
Through community-facing talks, outreach activities, and collaborations, I seek to make discussions of prostate cancer biology, biomarkers, and screening more accessible to non-specialist audiences. This work also reflects my wider commitment to reducing cancer inequalities by connecting molecular cancer research with the lived experiences and health priorities of underrepresented communities.
As a STEM Ambassador, I also engage with schools and young people, particularly from underrepresented backgrounds, to build interest and confidence in science and biomedical research careers, extending this same commitment to inclusion into the next generation of researchers. I am equally committed to supporting women in science and cancer research.
