Dr How Wee Ng
I am a Senior Lecturer with the School of Humanities. Prior to joining Westminster, I taught at Hull and SOAS, University of London, where I completed my PhD. Before coming to the UK, I was involved in theatre and worked as a radio producer-presenter. I have just published a monograph, The Chinese Censorship Discourse on Television Dramas: Worrying about the Audience in Postsocialist China. As a founding co-director of the Association for Curators and Programmers of Asian Cinemas, I am interested in curatorial projects focusing on the decolonising and queering of films alongside critical film pedagogy.
My research interests range from Sinophone film, media, theatre, visual culture to literature. A key aspect of my research examines the representations of audiences, censorship in Sinophone cinema and theatre, and in particular, the exclusionary politics of representation in relation to ethnicity, nationality, gender and sexuality. I am also interested in issues of cultural intervention, artistic autonomy, social justice, and the mediation of death and dying in visual culture. More recently, my research includes Asian film curation and film education.
