Dr Anees Ikramullah

Anees joined the Sports Management team at University of Westminster from Liverpool John Moores University as a Senior Lecturer in 2021, having completed his PhD from the University of Kent researching sustainability in public funded community intervention sports programmes.

His industry experience began with managing the UK's largest disability network football programme, and he has since helped secure more than £100,000 in funding for community football in London. His research has also included work for Sport England and the Stepping Out with Carers programme.

Currently, he specialises in grassroots football, and his more recent research examines commercial relationships in the voluntary sector. He applies these findings directly as chairman of his own football club and charity, which now delivers to over 400 people each week.

In 2025, Anees became Assistant Head of the School of Management, Marketing and Experience Industries, with a focus on Events, Hotel, Sports, Tourism and International Business programmes at undergraduate and postgraduate level. His most recent project is leading the PG Cert in Sports Events Leadership and Management, delivered in collaboration with London Marathon Events.

Fields of research revolve around community sports development with a keen interest in understanding factors that influence long-term participation in sport and physical activity through grassroots organisations.
