Ms Maria Bortnovskaya

Maria Bortnovskaya is a Lecturer in Management and Marketing at the University of Westminster. Maria actively involves industry guests in the sessions and business owners with whom students can work as part of the modules to enhance their learning experience.

Her 13-year career spans across marketing, management, PR, and journalism. Meanwhile, teaching and mentoring have always been an integral part of her day-to-day duties. 

Maria has worked with a wide range of B2C and B2B organisations across a variety of industries and sectors, including financial services providers, regional government departments, educational institutions, and creative businesses. Key roles included a communications and marketing strategist, a market researcher, a social media analyst, a business strategy consultant, a Governor’s speechwriter, a press officer to Vice-Governors, a journalist and an editor.

From 2018 to 2022, she was working with various London-based organisations and was helping them to develop and refine marketing and PR strategies, manage international campaigns, create engaging marketing materials, conduct market and customer research, deliver digital transformation & innovation, optimise supply chain management and operations management. 

As a market researcher, she was performing customer research on a project funded by a client with an annual turnover more than 40 billion dollars in net sales and revenue. 


  • 2023 Awarded with the University Certificate of Special Study (U Cert SS) in Supporting Learning in Higher Education and the Associate Fellowship status with the HEA (AFHEA).

  • 2019 MA in Media Management (University of Westminster, London, UK) — distinction.
  • 2015 Prof. Education Diploma in "Finance and credit" (Russian Presidential Academy of National Economy and Public Administration) — distinction.
  • 2010 BA/MA in International Journalism (St Petersburg State University, Russia).
  • 2012-2022 Professional trainings in Project Management.

Her research interests include strategic marketing communications, project management, content personalisation and fragmentation of audience consumption. 

Maria is currently finishing her doctorate research on content personalisation at the University of Westminster, which is supported by the Foundation Main Grant from Funds for Women Graduates (UK).
