Dr Ester Bonmati Coll

I joined the University of Westminster as a Lecturer in Computer Science and Engineering in April 2022. I have a long interest in medical imaging and machine learning.

I have a degree in Computer Science and a master degree in Computer Vision. I completed my PhD in 2016 with my thesis titled “Study of brain complexity using information theory tools”. Before joining Westminster, I was a Senior Research Fellow at University College London (UCL), and part of the Wellcome / EPSRC Centre for Interventional and Surgical Sciences (WEISS), the UCL Centre for Medical Image Computing (CMIC), and the Computer Assisted Navigation, Diagnosis and Intervention (CANDI) research group. Currently, I am an Honorary Senior Research Fellow at UCL.

Awards:

Outstanding Area Chair, Medical Image Computing and Computer Assisted

Intervention (MICCAI), 2022.

Early Career Researcher of the Year. Wellcome / EPSRC Centre for Interventional and Surgical Sciences (WEISS) winter Workshop, 2021.

Public engagement: Emerging Practice Award. Wellcome / EPSRC Centre for Interventional and Surgical Sciences (WEISS) winter Workshop, 2021.

Best research teaser award. Wellcome / EPSRC Centre for Interventional and Surgical Sciences (WEISS) winter Workshop, 2019.

Kuka best paper award at the Medical Image Computing and Computer Assisted

Intervention (MICCAI) workshop on Computed Assisted and Robotic Endoscopy

(CARE).

My research focus is at the intersection of machine learning and medical image computing and computer assisted interventions. My research has been largely in ultrasound-guided procedures for the detection and diagnosis of cancer (e.g., prostate and pancreas), and more recently, using machine learning. Currently, I am interested in the early detection of cancer, and image synthesis.

I am a reviewer for several international conferences and scientific journals.

I am also a PhD supervisor.
