Dr Jolel Miah


Jolel is a Health Psychologist registered with the Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC) and a Chartered Psychologist on the British Psychological Society (BPS) register. He is also a board member of the British Psychological Society’s Equality, Diversity, and Inclusion Committee and a Fellow of the Higher Education Academy. Jolel is deeply committed to promoting inclusivity and supporting student development. With experience in diverse environments, including the HMP prison service and founding a mental health charity, he is passionate about applying psychology to improve health outcomes within communities, students, and peers.

He studied at the University of Hertfordshire and Bedfordshire and has served as a guest lecturer at the University of West London and the University of Buckingham. Jolel also taught at the University of Sunderland before joining the University of Westminster.


His primary research interests focus on access to healthcare services among faith groups and diverse communities, examining the social, cultural, psychological, and structural factors that shape healthcare experiences, engagement, and accessibility. He is particularly interested in understanding patient and public experiences of healthcare and how individuals navigate healthcare systems and services. His secondary research interests include health behaviour change, with a focus on physical activity, weight management, and the psychosocial factors that influence engagement, adherence, and long-term maintenance of health-promoting behaviours.

Community and Faith-Based Research: Extensive experience conducting research with faith groups and diverse communities, using culturally sensitive and community-engaged approaches to understand health experiences, needs, and service access, Co-production and Public Engagement: Expertise in developing, implementing, and evaluating health interventions in partnership with patients, community stakeholders, and public groups, ensuring research is relevant, accessible, and impactful. and Research Leadership and Science Communication: Experienced in leading research projects from conception to dissemination, including project management, stakeholder engagement, public communication, academic publishing, and translating research evidence for professional and public audiences.
