Abstract | We give examples of data sharing in the UK National Health Service (NHS), through aggregate and disaggregated extraction of patient data, stored in General Practitioners’ (GP) databases, which are used in public health protection. We argue that we were able to build a component based software application which supports data sharing across the NHS, but underlying GP databases, which contain patient records, have not been designed with data sharing requirements in mind. Thus the emphasis is on the lack of provision of database elements within patient records stored in GP databases to enable more effective data sharing. We keep the issues of privacy of shared clinical data across the NHS outside the scope of this work |
