Abstract | The term "democracy contagion" caught the imagination of many observers of Arab politics in 2005. Its underlying assumption was that people aspire to democracy for their own society when they see transitions to democracy elsewhere. The verb "see" in this context is of prime importance since it refers literally to television images of people power in action. In particular, the so-called Orange Revolution in Ukraine was assumed to have inspired a putative Cedar Revolution in Lebanon via nightly news bulletins on television screens. But this assumption overlooks essential ingredients of political change. The media are indeed central to change but the models for understanding this centrality are complex. This introductory chapter explores the relationship between Arab media and Arab politics, identifying strands in the theoretical literature that can help us to understand the relationship better. |
