Abstract | As an ‘early adopter’ of each new medium of communication as it came on the global scene, from film, radio, TV and audiocassettes to satellite television and internet, Egypt’s media landscape reflects the political and economic contingencies behind the introduction of successive new technologies. This chapter recalls these factors and introduces the seven following chapters of the Handbook’s section on Media and Popular Culture by setting them in the context of four cross-cutting themes, namely: the place of media in Egypt’s regional relations; inter-generational communication and how issues around living standards and youth prospects are represented; legal and extra-legal limits on expression; and fourthly, the resourcefulness of those resisting repression. |
