| Abstract | This chapter explores the presentation of Eastern Europe as a site of monstrosity in two recent films, Phillipe Grandrieux's La Vie Nouvelle and Ulrich Seidl's Import-Export. It argues that despite superficial resemblances to cliché presentations of eastern europe as primitive other to the civilised West, both films use Eastern Europe as a site of monstrosity in order to pose ethical and aesthetic problematics that destabilise the hegemony of the West. |
