Abstract | Tiilimäki 18 is the purpose-built Aalto studio. It is the setting for one of the most sophisticated architectural practices of the 20th Century. The essay describes the emergence of the building, and its relation to the activities within. Grounded in trust and in the processes of play, the Aalto practice was a partnership between Alvar and Elissa Aalto. The essay gives prominence to Elissa, an often overlooked female architect, both in her time in partnership, and in the period from 1976 to 1994 when she ran the practice on her own. |
