Abstract | Conversations about unity between the Church of England and Methodism took place between 1956 and 1972. These are shown to have focused on debates about what a church is, and the expression of ministry within it. It is suggested that, due to the legal and constitutional framework these Conversations took place within, the approach taken of trying to resolve these issues via a Service of Reconciliation was probably the only feasible way forward. This detailed case study of a key moment in the history of ecumenism concludes by observing that the ambiguity designed into this Service was not, however, sufficient to accommodate the range of positions about Church and ministry held within the negotiating churches. |
