Held at the Gay and Lesbian Archives of South Africa (GALA), Johannesburg. In this discussion recorded in May 2023, activists and Pride organisers Fundi Ndaba and Ntsupe Mohapi discuss the significance of South Africa’s Hate Speech Bill, the challenges of working with and getting support from the South African authorities, the changing meanings of Pride and the significance and opportunities of diplomatic support and involvement in Pride in South Africa. Fundi and Ntsupe also discuss the challenges, meanings and place of feminism within their activism and the gendered struggles within the LGBT movement in South Africa. Finally, they discuss their forthcoming visit to London to participate in events at The Africa Centre and London Pride and how people in the Global North can be allies. |
