Abstract | Since the 1970s, numerous metro development projects have been proposed, planned, and constructed in China; this is referred to as the metro boom. This study investigated the comprehensive dynamics of China’s rapid urban metro network development. We conducted a longitudinal analysis of the topological evolution of metro networks by investigating the dynamics of their topology in 38 cities in mainland China using the latest development plans. The target period was 1970 to 2020 and beyond. Based on graph theory, we adopted several topological indicators to describe the mathematical characteristics of metro networks. Our longitudinal analysis unveiled five phases and two modes of development patterns. The phase classification was based on the development process and network scale: most metro networks were predicted to be in the last two phases by 2025, whereas some networks that opened after 2017 are still in the first two phases. The modes represent two development trends of metro networks: all metro networks alternate cyclically between Mode 1 (expansion) and Mode 2 (connection). These findings can help us understand the development principles of China’s municipal metro networks, which follow the national plan of the central government. |
