Abstract | A well-designed metro network provides alternative routes to travelers to enable rerouting opportunities in disruptive events and balance flows among lines in normal operations. This article adopts a route redundancy measure, which is defined as the number of behaviorally effective routes between each origin-destination (O-D) pair in the network, to evaluate urban rail system performance. By acknowledging the number of transfers is a crucial factor affecting travelers' route choice, our method extends the measure to considers the travelers' O-D-level route choice beyond the pure network topology and the shortest path considerations of the existing measures. By demonstrating the enhanced method in the case of the Beijing metro, we explore the characteristics of the efficient routes with a different definition compared to previous work. |
