Abstract

‘Global Photographies and Questions of Cultural Translation’ introduces the companion and its aims. Starting with a consideration of the terms ‘photographies’ and ‘global’, in relation to geopolitical mapping, visual culture, and postcolonial histories, the chapter surveys the state of the contemporary field and examines the extent to which photography gathers different values and meanings in its various local, international, and transnational contexts. The chapter describes the emergence of the structure and content of the book through a collaborative process of international scholarly dialogue to produce contributions clustered around the book's six major themes, with each section's approach grounded in a particular geographical region or regions. The chapter closes with a discussion of the translation of photographic images and texts between locations and languages, and insights to be gained through the open-minded pursuit of this process of cultural translation. The goal is not to create a unified global photography culture but rather to deepen conversation around shared concerns, foreground diverse approaches, provide a platform for underrepresented voices, and open new debates.
