Abstract | his paper examines the ethics of the Batman film franchise in dialogue with the philosophy of St. Augustine. In turning to this perhaps unlikely pairing of film and philosophy, it is interested in the mutual attention both give to examining the role of ethics within a failing society, and what kind of virtues emerge because of it. Focusing specifically on Augustine’s rhetoric of hope epitomised in the City of God, it will argue for the power of hope in Batman, and the relevance for Augustine’s ideas amongst a generation raised amongst the seemingly collapsing institution of the nation state. |
