Abstract | This is the last of the ten volumes of the Places of Worship in Britain and Ireland series, recording the religious buildings of these islands from prehistoric times to the present. The period from 1990 to 2021 was one of great change in the number and range of places of worship. While traditional Christian denominations declined, the newly arrived Orthodox Churches and evangelical Pentecostal denominations greatly expanded, and there was an even more significant increase in the numbers of non-Christian places of Worship. New mosques are surveyed in a second essay in the series, while temples for Hindus, Buddhists and Jains, and Sikh gurdwaras, are here covered for the first time. The streetscapes of many of Britain's urban areas now began to reflect the new reality of a multi-faith society, while rural settings remained largely unchanged. |
