Abstract

Reclaiming Colonial Architecture will unpack some of these questions around material inheritances of colonialism across a wide spectrum and re-think how we might understand, narrate, intervene in or act upon them. The work’s scope encompasses buildings, cities and material culture, and a range of responsive practices including design, textual critique, pedagogy, curation and other critical creative realms. It is conceptualised as an accessible but intellectually nuanced book that offers historical background, unpacks key concepts and presents thematically organised and multi-scalar urban, architectural and artifact-related case examples, showcasing compelling instances of how legacies of colonialism are being dealt with in real-world contexts. These will involve works and actions by built environment and material culture professionals such as architects, heritage and museum practitioners, academics/ educationists as well as community initiatives and activism.
