Abstract

This article analyses the role of magic and related practices in the artwork and writings of the English surrealist Ithell Colquhoun. Rather than being considered as marginal activities, alchemy and magic are considered here as core ingredients of modernist art practice, situating Colquhoun within the advanced art of her time.
