Abstract | There is evidence that children who are living in food-insecure families are more likely to suffer from education losses. Although research has shown the importance of eating between five and ten portions of fruit and vegetables each day, more than a quarter of UK children eat less than one portion a day. 200,000 children in England are missing meals daily while 5 million families are food insecure. The government U turn to support 1.3 million school children over the holidays with school meal vouchers will help but not address all the unmet need in these food insecure homes. Some researchers believe that we should invest in “gold standards” for nutritious school meals. Other campaigns suggest that all primary school children should have free school meals. The UK needs to do more to address food insecurity and child poverty in the UK. |
