| Abstract | The paper considers conceptualisations of play via the lens of street children in Asia (specifically Bangladesh and Nepal) embedded within wider notions of coloniality and the ‘colonial matrix of power’ (Mignolo, 2011). Existing discourse which considers children’s right to play is closely related to ideals of childhood rooted within coloniality, and largely considered through a global North lens. This lens obscures the realities of millions of children’s lives. For the young people discussed here – children who live on the streets, play is not absent, but inextricably linked to navigating lives and livelihoods, mitigating risk and surviving on the streets. |
