Abstract | In this entry, we consider two entities that are often considered entirely incommensurate: masculinity and pregnancy. Indeed, cultural depictions of pregnancy largely feature heteronormatively-coded images of women, typically awash with the gender-stereotypical trappings of femininity. Internet searches on “masculinity and pregnancy” generally yield results focusing on cisgender men’s feelings about contraception, pregnancy, or childbirth. Yet not all those who experience pregnancy embody femininity. Many masculine-presenting, gender non-conforming, or butch lesbian cisgender women; non-binary people; and transgender men experience pregnancy in and as bodies characterized more by masculinity or androgyny. Ultimately, pregnancy is an embodied experience that deserves fuller research attention to begin to challenge cultural binaries and stereotypes that are both limiting and incomplete in their description of the myriad diverse experiences of pregnancy. |
