Abstract | Cognition is the processing of information by the brain, in order to make sense of the world around us. This involves a number of different cognitive processes, notably perception, memory, and thinking. None of these processes are infallible, which means that we are all subject to misunderstandings, misjudgements, and illusions. However, people differ from one another considerably in their cognitive abilities, and it is possible that those who are more prone to cognitive errors may also be more likely to acquire incorrect beliefs. One possible example is our ability to make accurate judgements about the probability of unusual events and coincidences. |
