Abstract

This chapter explores how events can become educational platforms for sustainability. By embracing a long-term systemic view, it considers the inter-dependence of environmental aspects with social, cultural and economic ones and shows how socio-cultural norms and values influence the implementation of the educational message embedded in events. The institutional perspective at the core of Field Configuring Events literature, which explicitly acknowledges the influence of these factors, is adopted to derive two specific features of events considered as platforms. COP26 – the United Nations Climate Change conference held in Glasgow in 2021 – is used as a case study to demonstrate how the institutional perspective allows for a greater understanding of the role that events can play towards sustainable development.
