Abstract

The Games and Learning Alliance (GALA) community, established in 2013, represents a growing interdisciplinary network focused on advancing serious games research and practice through innovation and knowledge sharing. This study provides an overarching introduction to the contributions of the GALA community by employing bibliometric and thematic analyses to map the community’s composition, geographic origins, academic disciplines, and prevailing topics of interest. Results highlight the community’s interdisciplinary nature, integrating fields such as Education, Psychology, Computer Science and Health Education. The analysis reveals robust collaborative networks, exemplifying a Community of Practice that stimulates innovation and learning opportunities through shared practices and mentorship. Limitations of the study include the scope of analyses and AI tool constraints, necessitating further human validation of the insights gained. Future research will focus on longitudinal mapping and detailed examination of specific disciplines and frameworks.
