| Abstract | Over the past two decades, LGBTQ+ rights have been increasingly at the top of the international foreign and diplomatic policy agenda. The framing, adoption and implementation of LGBTQ+ rights and priorities have, however, been contested and subject to backlash and rapid reversal. In 2025, a workshop was held with diplomats at the Centre for Human Rights, University of Pretoria. This workshop generated case studies of good practice, recommendations on priorities and practical suggestions to help increase collaboration and information sharing. This toolkit report provides an overview of current research and debates about diplomatic support and advocacy for LGBTQ+ rights. The toolkit report contains a set of evidence-based conclusions, practical policy recommendations and guidance for everyday diplomatic LGBTQ+ advocacy and support. |
