Abstract

This article explores the role of memoir writing amid the violence of the Syrian revolution and subsequent civil war (2011-2024), through a close reading of Critical Conditions by Syrian media activist and frontline reporter Hadi Abdullah. Employing Astrid Erll’s concept of travelling memory and situated within a wider corpus of Syrian revolutionary memoirs and autobiographical-political writings, the memoir is examined as a personal testimony and an artifact that, through the themes and the lexical choices of its author, acquires significance beyond the context of the Syrian revolution and subsequent civil war.
