AuthorsHarvey-Kattou, L.
Abstract

This chapter considers the role of contemporary cinema from Central America as an example of counter cinema, arguing that filmmakers use their works to break with heteropatriarchal tropes and embrace a plurality of worldviews. Conceptualising the feminist gaze as one which undoes these gendered cinematic norms, regardless of the gender of the director, this chapter begins by foregrounding the theme of gender in the cinema of the region and the so-called ‘feminist turn’ of the twenty-first century. It then goes on to analyse the Guatemalan film Temblores (2019) by Jayro Bustamante and the elements of resistance found both within the narrative and visuals, arguing that the director successfully employs a vision of a queer time and space in which he invites the spectator to participate. It moves on to consider another Guatemala film, Pólvora en el corazón by debut filmmaker Camila Urrutia, also from 2019. This film will be explored in terms of the feminist time and space which is created within the visual space of the camera’s lens, its recall of Marianne Hirsch’s concept of postmemory as a psychological remnant of the violence of the past for future generations of trauma survivors, and in light of its revenge on Hollywood endings. Finally, it will discuss the feminist gaze and the rebirth of the protagonist, Isa, through her journey towards concientización in 2019 Costa Rican film El despertar de las hormigas by Antonella Sudasassi.
