| Abstract | This review synthesises institutional and sector data to identify key themes shaping the international student experience and inform ISSG (International Student Support Group) priorities. It highlights a changing global context marked by slower but continued growth in mobility, shifting recruitment patterns, and increasing economic and policy pressures influencing student decision-making. Institutionally, the data reveals a more diverse but volatile international cohort alongside growing reliance on domestic students. Across the student journey, recurring themes emerge: fragmented and poorly timed communication; challenges in transition and adaptation to UK higher education; generally positive but inconsistent learning and teaching experiences; difficulties in belonging and social integration; variable access to and awareness of support services; strong demand for employability support; and significant financial and wellbeing pressures. While many issues are shared with home students, international students experience additional structural and informational barriers. The report concludes that these challenges are interconnected and often rooted in communication and system design, requiring both targeted interventions and alignment with wider institutional strategies. |
