Description

A Feminist Chorus in three acts, entitled Un Refrain Féministe/A Feminist Chorus, was created on the occasion of the launch of 'Au-Dela Du Plaisir Visuel: Féminisme, énigmes, cinéphilie', the first publication in French translation of the film theoretical writings of Laura Mulvey. Invited by its translators Clara Schulmann and Teresa Castro, Reynolds orchestrated a three part sound event which took place on 7th April 2017 at Le Grand Action cinema in Paris.

The idea behind the score and the chorus was that it should comprise the texts being read simultaneously in French and English to signify the processes of translation concerning thinking, reading and speaking about Mulvey's film theoretical ideas.

The score and the chorus comprised a first act of 'readers' reading a selection of extracted texts chosen by Mulvey herself, the second was a chorus of 'makers', film-makers and artists living in Paris, who chose passages from the book which they aloud read in French and English around the circumference of the cinema auditorium, and the third act of 'viewers' consisted of the audience themselves completing the event by reading aloud from texts handed out to them on their arrival at the cinema, which presented extracts from Mulvey's writings in English and French translation.
