Description

The talk aimed to foreground African literature written in Spanish as a powerful tool for raising cultural awareness and promoting critical reflection on human rights. The main discussion centred on the first book by Ángela Nzambi, entitled Ngulsi—signed with her name Nanguan ma Nzam—in which the author recreates the different women archetypes within Bisio culture in Equatorial Guinea. The session also referred to Nzambi’s later works, Biyaare (2015) and Mayimbo (2019), which continue her exploration of identity, migration, and the female experience within African and diasporic contexts. Special attention was given to the contributions of women writers, whose narratives challenge dominant discourses and bring to light the complexities of gender, identity, and resistance. Through a selection of literary works, the session sought to foster intercultural understanding and underscore the transformative potential of the arts in advancing social justice. Delivered by María-José Gonzálvez, the talk offered a compelling call to recognise and value marginalised voices—particularly those of African and diasporic women—within the Spanish-speaking world.
