| Abstract | Since its beginnings in the 1960s, the Third Front has undergone a major discursive transformation, from military secret under Mao Zedong and economic anachronism under Deng Xiaoping to industrial heritage under Xi Jinping. In the early twenty-first century, the commemoration of this massive military-industrial complex has included the proliferation of Third Front museums amid wider cultural and creative industries clusters built upon the ruins of former factories. Focusing on Guizhou province, this article examines the incorporation of former Third Front industrial space into heritage discourse, the subsequent role of industrial heritage in urban development, and the serious challenges that this urban development currently faces. Bringing together research on displaying the Maoist past in museums with research on the political economy of cultural and creative industries clusters, it argues that a key function of building commemorative sites on Third Front ruins is to provide a justification for an anticipatory urbanism which may well itself end in ruins. |
