Abstract

This chapter discusses the implications of climate change for the world of work. The consequences of climate adaptation and mitigation include the disappearance of work in fossil fuel industries, the emergence of new areas of expertise and skills in the green economy, and an increasing awareness of sustainability in occupational cultures. Some of these trends are illustrated through the case of architectural practice in the UK, where, in response to climate adaptation, the nature of architectural expertise, the work process, and the profession’s culture have evolved to incorporate sustainability. The chapter argues that the transition to green and sustainable work is an uneven process shaped by technology-oriented climate policies and the social structures and relations that characterise our societies and the world of work. The result is the marginalisation of power disparities and inequalities reproduced in the green economy. The chapter calls for a critical appraisal of the dominant policy narrative of a bright future world of sustainable work.
