Abstract

I have worked in Higher Education for 10 years in several different positions; laboratory technician, postgraduate teaching assistant, PhD-researcher, and a lecturer. Interestingly, I began my journey in higher education after a failed dream of becoming an Olympic swimmer. Nevertheless, I obtained an undergraduate degree in Exercise Nutrition and a MRes in Sports Nutrition, both from Nottingham Trent University (NTU) where I worked closely with Prof Craig Sale, Prof Kirsty Elliott-Sale, and Dr Lewis James. I then began my first academic position as a postgraduate teaching assistant at Manchester Metropolitan University (MMU) where I also completed a PhD. Which examined ‘How exercise effect’s gastrointestinal function, appetite, and metabolic regulation’ with the guidance from Dr Gethin Evans & Dr Adora Yau. This nicely helped me progress to my first lectureship in 2021 at the University of East Anglia (UEA) before tacking up my current position in 2023 at the University of Westminster as a Lecturer in Human Physiology. This has provided me with invaluable experience, and balanced opinions within numerous university departments and scientific organisations. It is important to remember there is more than one direction or route to success. Not fitting with the ‘norm’, should be celebrated for the diversity individuals generate in building new ideas and solving problems.
