Abstract | This paper presents findings from a five year doctoral thesis, Hosted Space: the mediation of interactive public service content’ which builds on the work of Amy Jo Kim (2000), and Gilly Salmon (2000), who examined the facilitation of online communities and online learning services. The thesis observes the BBC moving from being a broadcaster to being a host, facilitating the publication, distribution and archiving of professionally produced, co-produced, and audience-produced content. It is proposed the BBC move from a technologically determinist position to one which foregrounds the mediation of content. |
